During the summer semester, Adult Sunday School will continue to explore the important Old Testament book of 1 Samuel.  This book tells the story of the beginning of Israel’s monarchy which involves the failure of the first king, Saul, and the rise of its second and paradigmatic king, David.  In addition to these two kings, there is the important figure of Samuel who is simultaneously Israel’s last judge and one of its most important prophets. 

Join us in the Parish Hall in-between the 9:00 and 11:15 liturgies for a light breakfast.  We will play and pray together.  This summer, we have a special guest scheduled each week to highlight how our family can continue to experience God together and contribute to the cathedral’s mission. 

Parents, grandparents, and mentors often wonder about how and when to initiate “the sex talk” with children.  This can be a difficult issue because many of us feel ill-equipped to do this and because our sex-saturated culture does not really understand sex.  This class aims at providing parents, grandparents, and mentors with both confidence and practical guidance in talking to children about human sexuality.  Before “the sex talk” takes place, we need to have a Christian understanding of the human person, created in the image of God, and possessing a soul and a body, the body being the expression of the soul.  Once this understanding is in place, we can begin to think about sex not simply in terms of biology but also in terms of God’s design for us as male and female.

Join me for an exploration of the various archetypal characters found throughout the book of Proverbs.  Together, we will learn about such characters as the Wise, the Fool, the Sluggard, the Virtuous Woman.  We will learn to identify these characters both in our communities and in our own hearts as we discover the wisdom Proverbs contains for personal formation in the pursuit of God. 

This class explores the rich and living tradition of hymns!  Participants will examine familiar hymns throughout the ages, their musical settings, textual depth, coinciding spiritual and historical movements, and liturgical use.  Through reading, discussion, and singing, participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the role of hymns in worship and spiritual formation. This class embraces all learners, regardless of musical ability or experience.

During the summer, children will spend time in God’s Word and have a special summer activity.  K-2nd grade will study God’s Big Story.  3rd-5th grade will study Valor and Virtues for young ladies and gentlemen. Some weeks the activity will take the whole class time.

This course will focus on reading, discussing, and reflecting on Rosaria Butterfield’s The Gospel Comes with a House Key.  Butterfield’s story of conversion from antagonism toward Christianity to being a faithful believer and pastor’s wife is inspiring.  In the book, she reflects on the very ordinary and unpretentious in-home hospitality that created her path to Christ.  A family’s simple and ordinary welcome and their willingness to listen and speak were the bridge from her antagonism to belief.  She explains how her family offers their home to God as a place where genuine love and grace are visible to reveal what true Christian faith looks like.  Butterfield casts a vision for a form of hospitality that is less concerned with polish and perfection and more concerned with sincerity and welcome.  This course will explore ways that Butterfield’s vision for hospitality can turn our homes into pathways to the Gospel.  Resource book: The Gospel Comes with a House Key by Rosaria Butterfield.

Youth are invited to watch episodes of “The Chosen” in order to engage in conversations about the mission of Jesus and the meaning of discipleship.

What does it mean to die well?  Why are we so disconnected to death in a society that is supposedly the most interconnected through technology?  How have Christians responded to death and suffering over the past two millennia? This class will journey and explore these questions and more.  Looking at past Christian wisdom, we hope to approach the heavy topics of death and suffering in a more informed and less nervous way.

What is that red book in the pews and how do I use it? Prayer Book 101 answers this question! Anglican worship is worship “by the book,” The Book of Common Prayer, 2019. Prayer Book 101 is designed to help you understand and use the Book of Common Prayer in both public and private settings. We will begin by looking at the origins of the Prayer Book tradition in 1549 and then spend some time with the Daily Office (Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer). After considering Anglican sacramental theology, we will walk through the two liturgies for the Eucharist. The class will also consider the sacraments of Holy Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, the Reconciliation of a Penitent, and Ministry to the Sick. We will also take a look at the collects and Scripture readings for Sunday and the liturgy for the Burial of the Dead. The class will conclude with an examination of the Church’s calendar of liturgical seasons and feast days.

If you have children or grandchildren, this class is for you!  The class will be using Real Mom Life, a biblically based curriculum taught by Linda Anderson and Theresa Nelson that encourages moms and grandmoms in their everyday mom jobs.  The video series provides perspective on some specific parenting situations such as raising strong-willed children, dealing with infertility, managing screen time, and facing learning challenges.  While being a mom can be exhausting and sometimes frustrating, there is hope for joy on the journey and in these lessons we talk about being a mom in the real world. 

You are invited to participate in a training focused on helping you do ministry as a part of daily life.  Anyone who wants to be equipped for ministry in their own sphere is welcome.  The training features segments such as “Listening”, “Community”, “Drugs and Alcohol”, “Violence and Aggression”, and a live-action Bible study.  The goal of this training is to encourage and to equip.

Isaiah is sometimes referred to as the “Fifth Gospel” because early Christian interpreters drew upon it so much as they attempted to show that the Gospel was “promised beforehand” in the Scriptures (Romans 1:2).  With 66 chapters, Isaiah is a sprawling book which culminates in a vision of “new heavens and a new earth” (65:17).  This class will focus on key portions of Isaiah and will involve an attempt to understand his prophecy in its original context and to think about how it is also Christian Scripture. 

This class is an introduction to To Be A Christian: An Anglican Catechism, the official catechism of the ACNA.  The Catechism is a guide to being a disciple of Jesus Christ and is divided into four sections: Beginning With Christ (The Gospel), Believing in Christ (the Apostles’ Creed), Belonging to Christ (The Lord’s Prayer), and Becoming Like Christ (the Ten Commandments).  Over the course of ten weeks, the class explores what it means to believe as a Christian, to pray as a Christian, and to live as a Christian.  The Catechism consists of 368 questions and brief, pithy answers which will be explored in detail.  If you are curious about Christianity, new to Christianity, or thinking about baptism, this class is for you.

Pray & Play (K – 2nd Grade): Children are invited to join us for play and worship on Wednesday nights. Children’s Compline is a child-led worship and prayer service at the high altar. This fall’s focus is book of Psalms. Parents are welcome to join or take a discipleship class.

Bible Explores(3rd, 4th & 5th grade): The girls and guys split up for an inductive bible study. Evening prayer and worship will be together at the High Altar.

Join us as we take a deeper look into the importance of martyrdom in the world of Christianity today. We will watch a video series called Torchlighters and investigate the lives of different martyrs in the Christian church and their stories of how they truly lived a Christ centered life in order to save others both spiritually and physically. We then will discuss what we watched and do some research to really dive deep into the sacrifices that they made so that we could know the real truth!

This class will allow for youth to have a voice in their learning and select from key words from the bible, research and discuss them. There are so many scriptures that correlate, overlay and relate to each other, why read just one! This class will challenge youth to use their bibles, research the various scriptures, highlight and mark key words within the bible.  Additionally, we know many have been sitting in school all day and we will incorporate a key upbeat worship song selected by the youth that attend the class. This will allow them to stand up, dance it out and just be present in the music before we start diving into scripture.

Human sexuality is a crucial and contested topic these days.  When we talk about it, we are really talking about what it means to be a human being and why we are sexual creatures.  This class is designed to offer participants a Christian understanding of the meaning and purpose of human sexuality as well as a Chrisitan understanding of the meaning and purpose of the body.  The class will be based on Christopher West’s book Our Bodies Tell God’s Story which will be available in St. Peter’s Bookstore. 

Join youth leaders John Driscoll and Susan Burton to explore the different "key words" in the bible. We want to take reading scripture and do it in a way that takes our understanding of what we read and look at it with new eyes! This will be a more condensed version of our Wednesday Night class that Susan and Cheryl will be leading.

The Grand Sweep of Scripture is a journey through the whole Bible and is intended to give adults and high school students a basic understanding of the biblical narrative and the faith which the Bible teaches. We will begin the fall semester by completing the Old Testament book of Judges and will then move on to Ruth.  Each Sunday, we will look at two to three chapters of Scripture with the purpose of discovering how God might be speaking to us.  Past sessions of the class can be found on the St. Peter’s website (go to www.stpetersfl.com and click on Livestream).

“Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel’.” (Mark 1:14-15). When we read these two verses carefully and meditate on them deeply it will inevitably lead us to ask, what is the Gospel? Most of us are familiar with the heart of the Gospel summed up in John 3;16, but in these verses from Mark, Jesus is speaking of the Gospel before his death and resurrection. Is this the same Gospel? Through a study of several different aspects of the Gospel, we will arrive at a fuller understanding of the Gospel as a whole, one in which we see that it concerns God’s relationship with mankind from eternity, from before creation. Instruction will focus on how to read and interpret poetry with attention to grammar, vocabulary, diction, and literary devices unique to the poetic form. To Be A Christian: An Anglican Catechism is the official catechism of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). This catechism expresses and teaches the Faith that the Anglican Church has received. This catechism focuses on the Apostles’ Creed as a fundamental statement of Christian believing, the Lord’s Prayer as the fundamental rule of Christian prayer, and the Ten Commandments as the fundamental guide to Christian living. This class is designed to help participants become familiar with the Catechism’s teaching so that they can become more fruitful and more effective disciples.
